Types of Rests
Music notes are used to represent musical sounds of differing durations. Music rests are used to represent periods of silence (no music being played) of differing durations.
Each note has a corresponding rest.
Each note has a corresponding rest.
Semibreve or Whole Note Rest
A semibreve rest lasts for 4 beats of silence. It look like a shaded rectangle hanging from a line. Although you can't see it, the rest hangs from the fourth line of the staff (either treble or bass).
Minim or Half Note Rest
The minim rest lasts for two beats of silence and is drawn resting on the third line of the staff.
Crotchet or Quarter Note Rest
Pictured on the left is the crotchet rest. It lasts for 1 beat of silence. This took me a while to perfect as it too a lot of practice!
Quaver or Eighth Note Rest
A quaver rest lasts for half a beat of silence.
Semiquaver or Sixteenth Note Rest
A semiquaver rest lasts for 1/4 beat.
Let's Review!
Take a look at the picture on the left for a review as well as a comparison of notes to their corresponding rest. Note well how the quarter, eighth and sixteenth note rests cover some of the lines of the staff. This is quite ok.
