Dotted Notes and Rests
One way of extending the duration of a note or a rest is by adding a dot to the right of it. When this is done, the note/rest is extended by half of it's original length.
For example, a whole note would ordinarily last for 4 beats, but if I add a dot to it, it now lasts for 6 beats (one and a half times its original duration.)
